PokerWire Turns the Page; Radio Show Signs Off

As many of you know, both the World Series of Poker and the World Poker Tour have both signed exclusive deals with competing magazines for media coverage.  With these new deals in place, media outlets like PokerWire.com are no longer allowed to post live updates or chip counts.  The WPT exclusive took us by surprise; over the last six months we had put together a team of reporters that was second to none in the industry.

There were many complaints by the media about limited access during the WSOP—but the WSOP restrictions seem almost lax compared to the press release about the WPT’s new arrangement.   The wording in the press release stated "Floor Access via escorted PR escort ONLY" in fifteen-minute increments and that "there will no longer be designated areas for media with tables, chairs, internet access and power."

We were pleased to see that the spirit behind the restrictions was much more gracious than the rules themselves.  The WPT PR representatvies have been as accomodating as possible since our arrival.  However, business decisions had to be made, and the loss of live updates and chip counts means that PokerWire can no longer continue to support a full staff and radio show.

The PokerWire you know and love will cease to exist.  We will include a few hands and the top 10 chip counts each level, but there will no longer be live updates and chip counts as these are made available by the WPT.

The entire staff will be moving on to new endeavors.  Some of them will be remaining in the poker community (we’ll update you on where everybody ends up) while others will be seeking careers in a different field.

This also means that PokerWire Radio will be broadcasting its final show from The Legends of Poker Tournament at The Bicycle Casino in L.A.  The show (shows?) will be recorded and posted this week.

It’s been an incredible ride for the company that brought you poker’s first real-time reporting.  With that in mind, special thanks are in order for the queen of the chip counts, Jen Creason.   Jen’s professionalism as a tournament reporter and chip counter opened the door for this industry.  Andy Bloch also made innumerable behind-the-scenes contributions during PokerWire’s formative year.

Finally, Heather Borowinski, Amanda Leatherman, Jeremiah Smith, Jeremy Firth, Joe Stapleton, Alex Henriquez, Gavin Smith, Joe Sebok, and LA Mike would all like to say “Thank you!” to the thousands of readers who have been relying on PokerWire for the last three and a half years…

WSOPEurope, MY End of Day 1; London, England

Author: Joe Sebok
Published on: 22:37:21 on Sep 11, 2007

I have so very little to bring back for you guys about today.  I got off to a roaring start, up to about 30k from our starting stack of 20k, but then things got very rocky...

I should have had my customary (haha) 80k by the third break, but instead I was left with a walk through Central London back to my hotel...

It wasn't that I didn't pick up any hands.  I picked up hands left and right.  It was actually pretty sick.  My problem was getting those hands to hold up...that was a little bit more difficult.

I had, no shit, the following hands come up, all in the second level...

I had KhKs cracked by a gutshot straight draw on the river.

I had a set of 6's cracked by a higher set, K's, on the river.

I had a flush, with 7h8h, cracked by quad 3's, with the 3d on the turn and then the 3son the river.

I had a set of 4's cracked by an open-ender on the river.

Haha!  For the love of George Washington Carver!  This is not even to mention the other three (!) sets that I flopped and/or hit on the turn, which actually held up!  I, honestly, just picked up and made too many damn hands too early in this tournament.  You just can't expect them all to hold up and when they don't...well, you get hurt quick.

I was all set up to go on a sick run on another day one, but it was dashed...such is life...

My brain is mushy from how busy I have been lately, so I am taking off for a couple of days in Paris, one of my absolute favorite cities on this planet, and I'll be hollering back at you kids from the Borgata next week...

peace to your domes,
J

A Sad End To The Day at Legends; Los Angeles, CA

Author: Joe Sebok
Published on: 16:10:56 on Aug 30, 2007

Man, what a depressing ending.  I ended up busting 7th in another WPT event, this time at the Legends event here in LA, and it really just sucks the ass of a goat.  There just isn't any other way to say it.

I really fought my ass off all tournament, and was really actually proud of how I played all week...

In the end I just couldn't get a couple of hands to hold up.  I held 10h10c against David Pham's As9d in a 2.5 million chip pot late, but he was able to spike an Ace on the flop to win that one.

Then, on the hand to send me out in 7th, I picked up QhQs and brought it in for my normal raise.  Tom Schneider reraised me and I shoved the rest in. He called pretty quickly and turned up his AsJs.  I survived the flop when it came all babies, but unfortunately for me the turn delivered the Ac to end my day.

Man, I just don't know what to say.  I am so depressed by all of these bubbles recently.  I keep feeling like my big breakthrough is here...just to let it slip away at the last second.  Blech...

Eh, what can you do?  Life ain't all bad.  I'll be smiles again in a few days.  I'm heading up to San Francisco tomorrow to hang with my old college friends and go to the Cal/Tennessee game in Berkeley, so how bad can it be?

Thanks to everyone for all of the support.  You guys have, and always are, amazing, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.  I promise to deliver you something to really cheer for one of these days...

Also, once again, www.thepokerroad.com is getting closer to becoming a reality...so STAY TUNED...it's gonna be so sick!

peace,
J

Joe Sebok - Pro Blog
We came in today and I was pretty short, but not really in desperation mode.  I just kind of hung out for awhile and unfortunately I couldn't do my typical Joe Sebok thing of just hammering the shit out of everybody.

But I was lucky enough to pick up two Aces on the bubble.  The small blind moved in on me and I called, obviously, but I did have to sweat the flop a bit.  He had Q10 and the flop came QJ9 with one diamond.  So he had every out imaginable but luckily the turn and river were two baby hearts and I doubled up.

Barry and I are at the same table and that's always a bitch.  But I have about 200,000 now so I can't really complain.
- Joe

Blinds Increase
The small denomination chips have been raced off the tables, and play resumes with increased blinds of 4,000-8,000, with a 1,000 ante.

Schneider Doubles Up
On a flop of A107 Mike Jung bets 20,000 from the small blind and Tom Schneider calls under the gun. The 2 falls on the turn and Jung fires out 30,000. Schneider then moves all in for 74,500 and Jung makes the call. Jung turns over A9 and Schneider shows pocket tens. The river brings the K and Schneider doubles up.

Top 10 Chip Counts
Gavin Griffin - 667,000
Lee Markholt Jr. - 599,000
Adam Geyer - 585,000
Arthur Peacock - 452,000
Peter Feldman - 446,000
Dutch Boyd - 364,000
Daniel Montagnolli - 364,000
Wayne  Chang - 312,000
Barry Greenstein - 307,000
Tom Schneider - 299,000

We Suck! Sorry For Dissappointing You Guys!; Los Angeles, CA

Hey guys!  I know you guys are anxiously awaiting another radio show, and we are really trying to pull a few together for you from the Bike...but it is proving difficult...

As you probably know, Gav busted yesterday...and had some business to deal with back in Vegas.  Stapes and I are trying to get our shit together to throw you guys a little love, but I am also incredibly strapped with bringing www.thepokerroad.com to life...

When play has ended at night, I usually go home and try to get some work done on bringing the site up and online.  Trust me on this; it is going to be so sick!  I am so fired up for some of the concepts we have coming down the pipeline...just give us a little time.

Also, a quick apology for not providing my normal tournament breakdown blogs.  As I said earlier, I have been too damn busy to get it going...

That's it, guys...wish me luck today on cracking that WPT nut...

We WILL try and pull something together from the Bike for you still...even if it's only one or two shows...

peace,
J

The Cat Wriggled Out Of The Bag...; Denver, CO

Don't have time to drop too much knowledge on you tonight, my little poker monkeys, but just wanted to say a few things really quickly...

Though it is true that our little radio show has lost it's home yet again, rest assured that it will live on...

IT WILL LIVE ON!

I am dilligently working with several entities to make this a reality, so please stay tuned and don't get too worked up just yet...

I have my own project that I am trying to make happen, if for no other reason than to give the show it's own, slightly more stable home...

I'm beat.  The wedding was killer, but I gotta crash in order to drag my ass out of bed early enough to make the event tomorrow...

Talk to you from the Bike tomorrow...

peace,
J

PokerWire Radio is...?

Author: Joe Stapleton
Published on: 23:24:35 on Aug 25, 2007

Alright, well, it looks like someone was able to break the news to y'all before any of us on the radio show could.  I must say, it was pretty well written, and I wasn't too emotional about the end of the show until reading it (and your comments).  Considering the Internet is full of nothing but geeks and haters, I've received nothing but love and support from you all - which I consider to be quite a feat.

Don't go anywhere just yet though, because the shows aren't totally done.  We're recording this week from the Bike, and as soon as Sebok's back from his wedding tomorrow, we're going to have the following silliness coming at you:

--  Sebok found someone willing to wager $5,000 against him in the Krispy Kreme donut bet (Sunday's show)

--  Race Situations

--  Sandy the Degenerate (hold on to your lunch for this one)

--  Full Tilt fantasy free roll update

--  WSOP Main Event Final Table Recap

--  Plans for the Future

--  So Long, Farewell, Al-Henriquez-der-zane

Happenings, Happenings...; Denver, CO

Published on: 00:58:44 on Aug 25, 2007

What's the haps, my friends?  There has been tons and tons going on with me, so I'm going to go ahead and fill you guys in on some of it quickly...

Just an FYI, the next few months could get really exciting...

The Bike/$5k Krispy Kreme Bet
For those of you avid listeners of the radio show, you already know that I took a bet a few years back that I could eat 50 (!) Krispy Kreme doughnuts in 2 (!) hours.  Well, I lost that bet terribly, but through the power and influence of Internet radio it seems that we have another brave soul who would like to take the bet on.  It's gonna be fun.  It's gonna be gross.  It's gonna make someone $5000 richer.  Tune in to our Sunday show to find out how things turn out for our lucky contestant.  You'll also be able to check it out on "Prop Bets" on RawVegas soon...

This weekend also marks the beginning of the end of my little poker vacation.  It's time to get back to work and I can't think of a better place to start than the Bike.  Last year right after the WSOP I went on a sick run and had an amazing couple of months.  Let's hope I can rekindle some of that and make some noise soon.  I'll be starting on day 2 from the Bike because...

Wedding in Denver
My wonderful cousin, Molly, is getting married in Denver and I have gotten myself over here to have some fun and help them celebrate.  It's gonna be a good time...

To boot, I also absolutely love Colorado and if I didn't make my home in California, I am sure that I would do so here.  It's just so gorgeous and everyone seems to live there lives on a bit different schedule out here.  You gotta come check it out if you haven't...

ThePokerRoad.com
As some of you may know from the teaser site that is already up, Bear and I have decided to join forces and bring to life a new poker website, one that is a little bit off of the beaten path.  Enter www.thepokerroad.com.  I won't say too much...yet...but stay tuned as we promise to bring you some of the most biting and witty "pokertainment" from some of the people that you have come to trust in the last few years...It is going to be one hell of a fun ride...

Catch up with you guys soon...

peace,
J
